The New River has existed for more than 160 million years and is second only to the Nile as the oldest river in the world. It runs north for 320 miles where it meets the Ohio River and continues its 700-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. The New River Gorge is one of the most biologically diverse areas in North America with more than 1200 species of plants and animals thriving in and around the vicinity.
